OPPOSE CORNELL' S PROPOSED LAKE SOURCE COOLING
PROJECT
Cornell is about to break ground on an ill-conceived project to air
condition its campus with massive quantities of cold water drawn from
Cayuga Lake. The proposed 55 Million Dollar project should be opposed
because it would worsen Cayuga Lake's alrea dy unacceptable water
pollution problems:
- Cayuga Lake is included on the New York 303(d) list of
waterbodies that cannot meet water quality standards. According to
Section 122.4 of the Clean Water Act, "new discharges" are prohibited to
303(d) waters if they will make existing pollution p roblems worse;
- Cayuga Lake is impaired by nutrients and silt. The Lake Source
Cooling Project's discharge of up to 46 MILLION GALLONS/Day of warmed,
phosphorus-rich water would make those problems worse and should be
prohibited.
